Most hawaii beach hotels are high rise, typically with 10-20 stories, and offer fantastic views, although very few actually front the beach itself - most a hundred yards back from the shore, and in the more built up areas of Waikiki (Oahu), Poipu (Kauai), Kihei (Maui) and Kailua-Kona (Big Island), many of the hotels are across the road. Beach views are generally more expensive, although mountain views are equally compelling, and the higher up the building you go, the more you'll pay. The larger resorts usually have their own restaurants and bars, whilst condominiums offer self catering facilities.

On Oahu, almost all hotels are in Waikiki and its surrounding areas of Ala Moana and Diamond Head. There are only a couple of hotels outside of Waikiki.

Kauai beach hotels are concentrated around Poipu along the sunny South Coast and more affordable accommodation can be found along the East Coast in the seaside towns of Lihue (Kalapaki Beach), Wailua and Kapa'a. Several large luxury resorts are at the purpose built tourist complex of Princeville on the spectacular North Coast.

Maui beach hotels can be found north of Lahaina Town between Kaanapali and Kapalua on West Maui and at Wailea, south of Kihei Town on south west Maui. Kihei, which has several popular beaches, has a few beach hotels, but the majority of accommodation there is the mountain side of the road, with public access and beach parks fronting the shore.

Big Island beach hotels can be found mostly on the Kohala Coast, north of Kailua Town on the sunny west side of the island. Here there are a dozen large resorts including Outrigger and Prince Hotels, as well as the smaller Kona Beach Resort. In Kailua Town, there are plenty of hotels on the coast but most have only tiny cove beaches or rocky seafronts. The best of these is the King Kamuela overlooking the harbour.
